A Change of Season

Last week we had all of our walls repainted.  Just to freshen things up.  For awhile everything was piled in the middle of the shop, then the reorganizing (and putting more things out in the hall on sale) began in ernest. 

We're thoroughly enjoying these beautiful late August days.  But inside the shop we're gearing up for the change of season.  Autumn colors are appearing.  

 

We found some great little candle rings for your table, which also work as napkin rings.  Two different colors are available - both lovely rich Autumn tones.

This fluted antique pan would be great filled with fall potpourri.

P.S.  Lots going on in Kerrytown these days. Enjoy the Farmer's Market on Wed and Saturdays.   Summer Sunday Concerts in the Courtyard.  The Kerrytown Bookfest just a few weeks away.  We have new neighbors across the hall - Fustini's Oil & Vinegar.  Elephant Ears has expanded and moved down the hall.  VtoV has been reinvented as a smaller boutique - I love their new look!  And all of your old favorites round out Kerrytown as a wonderful neighborhood place to visit and shop and eat!

Annual Chippy China Sale August 14th @ FOUND

 

I've finally gathered enough less than perfect dishes to offer this year's Chippy China Sale!  For this event we bring out chipped plates, cups without saucers (and saucers without cups), crazed dishes, broken platters and even some perfectly good "left-over" china from estate sales - then we sell it for $1 per pound.  We put an old scale out in the hall with piles of dishes, you just gather and weigh what you have a use for, rounding to the nearest quarter pound.  Pay $1/pound and pack it up!

There is a great selection for mosaic projects!  I've seen old china incorporated in to jewelry designs and other interested recycled crafts.  Less than perfect plates are great to use under plants or to line the garden walk.  Odd bowls work as cat dishes.   A pretty saucer works as a soap dish or to hold jewelry.  Many of these are actually just fine for using to eat on if you like to mix and match patterns. 

This sale begins Saturday morning, August 14th at 9:00.  And will last until it's all gone.   We're open until 6:00 on Saturday, and from 11:00 - 5:00 on Sunday.  Come early for best selection.

Winner of art junk - Barbara Carson!

We have a winner from those who commented on the Whipple workshop posts.  Barbara Carson - your number won!   We have a selection of background music, misc. ephemera, rusty zig-zag metal, game pieces and little odds 'n ends that you can pick up at FOUND.  With a cigar box to stow it in until the inspiration hits to make something out of this stash.  Stop in any time - I'll have it behind the counter with your name on it.

Linen postcards + photos from Mark, Illinois

As I entered an antique shop off the interstate last week, the owner was just beginning to sort an enormous consignment of souvenir postcards.  Of course, I was curious.  An hour and a half later, I had about a quarter of his stash in my possession. 

The majority of the cards in this batch are from what is known as the Linen Card Era from about 1930-1945, when publishers used linen paper stock with a high rag content.  Colorful dyes and bold graphics distinguish these cards.  This is from a time when highways were being impoved and travel by automobile was popular.   Building of the Pennsylvania Turnpike began in the late 1930's and the person who collected these cards obviously traveled along it.  There are 5 folio sets of the turnpike.  Also lots of New York, Atlantic City, Florida, Cleveland, Philly, amusement parks, Cedar Point, little guest cottages and motels.

Over 400 cards in all...

Another day of my trip took me off the beaten path.  As I was driving down a country road, I took a right turn to check out the town of MARK.  Not sure why I stopped... guess I was just amused to think of all the guys named Mark who might live there.   And to see whether I should tell my brother Mark that he should go check it out...

 

Less than an hour from where I grew up, I didn't know it existed. 

Actually a neat little town with 3 places to eat and a nice park.

I didn't need either.   But if you know anyone who needs a steel mill, this one is north of Peoria.

So we kept driving - glad that mom has a Garmin (that she named Lucille) so we could find our way back to the main road and the antique shops!
